SMHA Introducing U18A City Wide in 2026-27

The Saskatoon Minor Hockey Board of Directors has approved the implementation of a U18A City Wide league that will begin play in September 2026.

The City Wide U18A program will be modelled after the successful City Wide U15A program that was implemented by SMHA in 2022.

Many players in U18A hockey will have played some form of City Wide program in their minor hockey careers - either AA or U15A.  The City Wide draft format allows for U18 players of all ages and from all zones to have an equal opportunity to make a U18A team. The City Wide format for U18A also allows for zones to be more balanced in B and C hockey as the appropriate number of players from each zone are in U18A.

While dates and details still need to be finalized, tryouts for U18A will be similar to the format used in U18AA tryouts.  The tryouts will include three scrimmages per player.  SMHA will open Head Coach applications in the spring with interviews being conducted in late summer.

SMHA is excited to announce that the new U18A City Wide league will be celebrating SMHA and Saskatoon hockey history with all of the teams named after past zones or past teams from Saskatoon's great hockey history. The teams will be as follows:

  • Saskatoon Barons - retired SMHA Zone (2007)

  • Saskatoon Colonels - retired SMHA Area (1980)

  • Saskatoon Knights - retired SMHA Zone (2007)

  • Saskatoon Oilers - retired SMHA Area (1980)

  • Saskatoon Olympics - Saskatoon SJHL team from 1969-1978

  • Saskatoon Raiders - retired SMHA Zone (2007)

We look forward to providing more information in the near future on the developments for this new initiative.
